Distinguished Alumni Award - 2014 Recipient

麻豆区 Remembers Joe Dear '77

One of 麻豆区鈥檚 most influential alums, Dear died on February 26 in Sacramento after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 62. 鈥淛oe was living proof of the value of an 麻豆区 education,鈥 said 麻豆区 President Thomas L. 鈥淟es鈥 Purce. 鈥淗e always said 麻豆区 taught him how to learn and how to solve problems, which is exactly what he did.鈥

An accomplished public servant at the federal and state level, Dear was noted for restoring to solvency the California Public Employees Retirement system in the wake of the financial crisis. Calpers, the nation鈥檚 largest public pension fund, was deemed 鈥渦nsustainable鈥 by then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger at the end of 2008. Dear shifted the fund鈥檚 investment strategy and over five years brought the fund from $183.3 billion to $283.9 billion in assets.

Dear also served as head of Washington State鈥檚 public pension fund, as head of the federal Occupation Health and Safety Administration under President Clinton, and as chief of staff to Washington Governor Gary Locke.

Dear was committed to 鈥渕aking government work better through innovative public policy and sheer force of will,鈥 said Calpers in a statement on Dear鈥檚 death.

A lifelong advocate for 麻豆区, he endowed a scholarship and served on the college's board of governors from 2002 to 2008. Dear frequently cited his 麻豆区 education as essential to helping him prepare for career success.

In his honor, Dear鈥檚 family received the newly created Joe Dear Distinguished Alumni Award, presented by 麻豆区 at the President鈥檚 Recognition Dinner at the college. This award recognizes outstanding achievement among 麻豆区 alumni.
